The United States has revoked the visas of eight justices of Brazil’s Supreme Court. The justices whose visas were canceled include Luís Roberto Barroso, José Antonio Dias Toffoli, Cristiano Zanin, Flávio Dino, Cármen Lúcia, Luiz Edson Fachin, and Gilmar Mendes. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the revocation of visas of the eight Brazilian Supreme Court justices. Writing on X, Secretary Rubio described the investigation into Jair Bolsonaro as “political persecution” and announced the cancellation of visas for investigating judge Alexandre de Moraes and his court associates.

It has been reported that three justices—André Mendonça, Kassio Nunes Marques, and Luiz Fux—were exempt from the sanctions. According to The Guardian, the White House has intensified its campaign to ensure that former President Jair Bolsonaro is held accountable in court for allegedly attempting to seize power through a military coup.
Bolsonaro, known as a right-wing populist leader associated with Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, is currently facing trial for allegedly orchestrating a violent plot to retain power after losing the 2022 election to leftist opponent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is expected to be found guilty by the Supreme Court within weeks and could face up to 43 years in prison if convicted.
As the court’s decision approaches, Trump has reportedly increased pressure on the court and President Lula’s administration. On July 4, Brazil’s federal police raided Bolsonaro’s home and placed him under electronic monitoring.
